Today we will tell you about which solar equipment is right for you.
It can be really difficult to choose your equipment
There are so many solar retailers, literally in the thousands, and it can be difficult to choose which to deal with… hopefully we’re assisting you in that regard!
To make things more difficult, every solar retailer has multiple equipment manufacturers that they offer. And all will claim their equipment is good quality and has some special feature. And even with a university qualification plus 15 years experience in the solar industry, it’s hard to tell solar truth from marketing ‘spin’ – especially as there are new manufacturers starting up every year.
And if you go down the path of deciding which panel and inverter manufacturer you prefer, you then have to find a reputable solar retailer that stocks your products.
You don’t have to choose your equipment
The key thing to know is:
If you choose the right solar retailer, you will automatically avoid poor-quality equipment.
Firstly, truly dodgy solar equipment no longer gets sold in Australia. That wasn’t the case in 2015, but nowadays there are higher standards required for importing and registering solar equipment. As we mentioned previously, ‘Tier 1’ isn’t necessarily a marker of quality: 95% of panels installed in Australia these days are Tier 1.
That said, some equipment is still far lower quality, and some equipment is truly great quality. Some solar inverters will last 6 years, some will last for 15 or more years. Performance warranty is almost stock-standard 25-30 years when it comes to solar panels, but the manufacturer’s product warranty can vary considerably and provides some indication of manufacturer’s confidence in their product.
Solar retailers that ‘beat any price’ will probably be using lower quality product, plus cutting corners on the installation and not supporting their customers very well.
Decent solar retailers, on the other hand, guard their reputation and wouldn’t touch inferior product. So, you don’t have to choose your equipment, just choose a decent solar retailer and they can recommend what is suitable for your circumstances.
Mercedes Benz, Toyota, or Great Wall?
The biggest secret in the solar industry is:
In its first year of operation there isn’t a massive amount of difference in the energy production of a top-quality solar panel, compared to a poor-quality panel.
Higher quality solar equipment typically lasts longer, and sustains its high performance for longer. But it doesn’t magically manifest a second sun in the sky, so don’t expect a system that costs twice as much to capture twice as much energy in a year.
Because a solar power system is a long-term investment, there are certainly good reasons to buy high-quality equipment. Your circumstances or preferences can also steer you towards shade-tolerant systems, panels with improved aesthetics, or inverters with additional functionality.
The function of a car is to get you safely from point A to point B. And yet some cars cost ten times as much as others. Factors such as prestige, warranty, reputation, aesthetics and company longevity apply when you’re buying a car, and the same is true when you’re buying a solar power system.
